In order to know the effect of soil and lime on decaying of oil cake which is still common in garden use, an incubation study was made. 5gr of oil cake was mixed with 10gr of soil, 37§· of lime, or 10gr of soil plus 37§· of lime, and then added with 20§¢ of demineralized water. Thus prepared oil cake mixtures were incubated for 26 days at 30¡É under an anaerobic conditions. The results of the study are summarized as follows.
1. The addition of either soil or lime, or both raised the pH of oil cake mixture and increased ammonia production remarkably.
2. A greater accumulation of ammonia was observed in the treatment mixed with soil alone when compared with those received soil plus lime or lime alone.
3. The larger accumulation of ammonia in the treatment mixed with soil is discussed to be accounted largely for the absorption of ammonia by the soil colloids.
